🌳 NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY September 26TH

Avenal's Parks, Outdoor Spaces & Mountain Views
AVENAL, Calif. — Saturday, September 26, 2026, marks National Public Lands Day, a nationwide observance dedicated to appreciating America's public lands and outdoor spaces — and recognizing the importance of caring for the places communities share.

What Does National Public Lands Day Mean?
National Public Lands Day is a day to get outside, appreciate public lands and help care for them.
The observance encourages people to:
🌳 Enjoy parks and outdoor spaces
🥾 Walk, hike and explore nature
🧹 Participate in cleanups and volunteer projects
🌎 Respect natural areas, wildlife and public spaces
🤝 Recognize the importance of outdoor places to local communities
The National Park Service describes the day as a nationwide opportunity for volunteer service and appreciation of public lands. The 2026 theme is “Caring for Our Shared America.”
Bringing the Meaning Home to Avenal
For Avenal residents, National Public Lands Day can also be a reason to look at the outdoor spaces and natural surroundings right here in our own community.
Avenal has public parks and recreation areas where residents can gather, play, exercise and spend time outdoors.
Floyd Rice Park offers playgrounds, basketball facilities, picnic areas, covered pavilions, barbecue areas and other amenities for residents and families.
The community also has Avenal Neighborhood Park, the Avenal Sports Complex and Avenal Skate Park, along with other public recreation and landscaped areas.
But Avenal's outdoor character extends beyond the boundaries of its parks.
🏔️ Avenal's Views & Open Spaces
One of the things that makes Avenal distinctive is its surrounding landscape.
The community sits against the backdrop of the Avenal hills and surrounding mountain terrain, creating beautiful views that residents can experience while spending time outdoors.
For people who enjoy walking, hiking, exploring or simply taking in the scenery, the area's open spaces provide opportunities to experience the natural side of Avenal.
A morning walk, an afternoon outside or a hike through the surrounding landscape can be a simple way to get exercise while appreciating the views that are part of our community.
Caring for the Places We Share
National Public Lands Day is also a reminder that enjoying public spaces comes with a responsibility to help take care of them.
That can mean something as simple as picking up trash, respecting posted rules, staying on appropriate paths, protecting natural areas and leaving a park or outdoor space clean for the next person.
It doesn't necessarily require traveling to a national park or another faraway destination.
Sometimes appreciating public lands starts right here at home.
